I discovered Huntress with the release of their debut album Spell Eaters back in 2012. What initially caught my eye, as any red-blooded male would agree, was the fact that singer Jill Janus is incredibly attractive. We’re talking super hot. Add her proclivities for wearing as little clothes as possible and I felt it was in my best interest to at least give them a shot. That album ended up being one of my favorite releases of the year, and had nothing at all to do with Janus’ looks, but everything to do with her fantastic voice and awesome metal songs.

Huntress is back with their sophomore release Starbound Beast out now on Napalm Records. Much like its predecessor, it is another marvel in heavy metal awesome-ness! Combining classic metal with good doses of thrash and doom for extra power, Huntress are one of those rare bands that gets it right. With Janus’ four octave capabilities matched by the guitar prowess of the duo of Blake Meahl and Anthony Crocamo, the driving bass of Ian Alden, and the drumming of Carl Wierzbicky, the band comes together to create a sound all their own while remaining true to those who came before. I absolutely love this band and feel like they’re in a class all their own as far as bringing something new to the game while still having appeal to old farts like me. Tracks like “Receiver,” “Blood Sisters,” “Zenith,” and the wonderfully titled “I Want To Fuck You To Death” are just a handful of standout tracks from a stellar album.

We have another contender for album of the year again my faithful readers. I foresee me listening to this, as well as their debut, many times over the remaining years of my life. Straight forward, in your face heavy metal with one of the most metal females leading them down the path of heavy metal righteousness- I have seen the future and it is Huntress. Go get it…NOW!
