Live Gig Review by Mark Dean (Journalist/Writer/Contributor) Myglobalmind Webzine

Max Cavalera-a true metal legend in his own lifetime. Four years after his last Belfast visit the man was back in town with his bandSoulfly. Despite nearly selling out the larger next door venue last time, the band had opted to play the smaller room on this tour to promote the “Savages” release. I caught up with Max pre show for a chat and found him to be a very easy going and friendly guy, quite at odds from his on stage persona.

Opening the show this evening were young upcoming band Lody Kong. The band consists of two sons of Soulfly frontman Max-Zyon and Igor. Despite a small showinSONY DSCg in crowd numbers the bands mash up of rock , industrial sounds and old school punk proved very popular with the younger audience members, Showing a vigour and energy the band did a competent and solid job of warming up the crowd prior to the main act. My interest was piqued enough to seek out and find out more about the band once the show had ended.

Time for Soulfly to hit the stage, and as the venue started to fill up, energy levels began to mount.Energetic, vibrant and also brutally powerful, circle pits quickly took over the front of stage area. Soulfly have a passionate and a hardcore fan base, as evidenced by some of the fans that I chatted to pre show who had made the trip from places as far away as Hungary! Despite having reservations about signing Sepultura albums for fans, Max and Soulfly have always included songs by his former band in their set. Following a recent internet spat with Sepulturas existing singer this policy has not changed.

The set was a 50/50 split between Soulfly and Sepultura songs. I feel that Max has a situation where he has developed his own sound and catalogue of Soulfly albums, but he feels like he still has to play Sepultura songs for the fans. It was interesting to observe that the most vociferous reception was generated by the Sepultura songs that made up the set. Max had indicated in our chat pre show this dilemma.

Soulfly however did deliver a powerful show, and there was certainly no evidence of merely”going through the motions”as each band member gave one hundred per cent effort. Nice that crowd figures had picked up sufficiently by the start of the Soulfly set in typical N.Ireland gig going style as many chose to sit out the support band, preferring beers in the bar next door.

A hot sweaty July night, with some brutal heavy music-that always works as my “sounds of summer”
