Being a more recent convert to GOATWHORE it’s been a lot of fun immersing myself in their catalog from top to bottom. And I was truly blown away by their set on the Metal Alliance Tour here in Dallas back in April. “Judgement of the Bleeding Crown” is still my favorite song from these guys. Well, it now has some serious competition, but more on that in a minute. New album Constricting Rage of the Merciless will be unleashed on the metalheads on July 8 via Metal Blade Records and it is a short and sweet (38 mins) attack on the senses from track one to track ten!

Right from jump the attack is on with “Poisonous Existence in Reawakening”, drummer Zack Simmons firmly in control of the S.S. GOATWHORE while Sammy Duet’s guitars wash over you in wave after merciless wave both here and on “Unraveling Paradise”. Ben Falgoust sounds as vicious as ever, and you can feel James Harvey’s bass lines in your chest, like you’re SUPPOSED to. When I heard “Baring Teeth for Revolt” there was no doubt in my mind that this was gonna be a great record. It’s a perfect pairing of thrash and punk with the combined fury of both and definitely an album favorite. Sammy makes us all slaves to the riff machine once again with “Reanimated Sacrifice” and Ben’s growls have never been better!

There is an infusion of melody in “Heaven’s Crumbling Walls of Pity” that does nothing to detract from the brutality of the song; rather, it enhances it. And Simmons completely dominates this track once again. The longest song (and almost longest title) of the bunch is “Cold Earth Consumed In Dying Flesh” featuring a very atmospheric intro that soon gives way to a thick, oozy, piece of toxic sludge, scraped from the primordial depths of some pit of despair. It picks up steam at the end, which takes us into my runaway favorite “FBS”. Fuck, when they released this I must’ve watched the goddamn video a dozen times in a row while wanting to hurl people and/or things from a window. Just a killer song that had me wanting to get Fucked By Satan, too! It is now almost tied with “Judgement” as my all-time favorite tune.

“Nocturnal Conjuration of the Accursed” is pretty straightforward but, much like the band themselves, doesn’t really fit into any one category. In fact, don’t even try to pigeonhole GOATWHORE because once you think you’ve got them figured out they completely shift gears on you, so there’s never a dull moment. “Schadenfreude” is a perfect example of this that features some of Duet’s most melodic guitar work yet and is ANOTHER album standout. Closer “Externalize This Hidden Savagery” is exactly that…savage. It comes in, wrecks the joint and leaves you in a broken heap, all in about three minutes total. Shit, there’s even a hint of old SLAYER on this one, and it just ends things perfectly. I love GOATWHORE, and I love this album!! You better go and get Constricting Rage of the Merciless on July 8, people. NO EXCUSES!!
