Beyond a shadow of a doubt one of the best bands in the Charlotte NC area to see live and listen to their albums would have to be Tattermask. Within a short amount of time they have become a band that if I miss seeing I feel bad about it. I was beyond happy to make it out for their CD release party a few weeks ago celebrating the hard work they put into their latest EP Carpe Noctem.

From the very start of the album, “Better Off Alone” is a slamming song, full of everything that makes Tattermask such a phenomenal band. You’ve got the stunning vocals of Amanda, the brilliant guitar work of Josh and Travis, with the pummeling rhythm section of Adam and Harley. The album gets darker with the following track “Asylum.” The way Amanda’s voice bounces off the music is sheer musical perfection. I love the haunted feeling this one gives me. They follow this with a spot on cover of Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose.” This is a very ambitious song for someone to take on, but Tattermask make it sound like they’re playing something simple like “Happy Birthday.” Strong vocals, lilting into heavy guitar riffs, and that propulsive back beat during the chorus, then the great guitar solos, I just can’t say enough good about this cover. After that they move into “Concern” which is easily my favorite track from the album. That driving guitar riff and Amanda’s passionate voice get my head bouncing and my heart soaring. The album ends with “No More” which starts off quiet, then builds into this heavy metal crescendo that is absolutely the best way to end an album: making me want even more.

Talking to the members of the band, I know that they have put a lot of time and effort into making Carpe Noctem as perfect as possible. I don’t think they have anything to worry about. This is an album they should be proud of and will get multiple plays from me. They are one of the few bands who have managed to take the energy they have on stage and make it happen in the studio. There is so much talent in this band it would be a shame for them to not skyrocket to the top very soon. This is already one of my favorite albums of the year so far.
