Back in May of this year, Rock Goddess, a band comprising of three dynamic ladies, Jody Turner (guitar and vocals), Julie Turner –sister of Jody (drums) and Tracey Lamb (bass) played their first gig in 32 years at the O2 Academy Islington. I guess they liked it and the reaction of the audience then probably enticed them so much that seven months later they did it again… (I am so glad they didn’t leave it for another 32 years!!)

Supporting acts for the night was from Desolation Angels and Praying Mantis.

Desolation Angels was formed in the early 1980’s. Still having founding members Robin Brancher (guitar) and Keith Sharp (guitar) in their lineup opened the evening. With their more traditional style of ‘hard riffs and heavy metal thunder’ that is their trade mark; Desolation Angels got us started in fine style. Follow them on desolationangels.co.uk

Praying Mantis was formed by brothers Tino and Chris Troy in the mid-1970’s and were next on stage. With Praying Mantis playing their melodic style heavy metal, this evening was starting to feel a bit more like an evening of old school heavy metal and reminiscent of great times being had at the old Marquee club in London, with plenty of good ‘ol head banging tunes… (Although I do wish I had still had the same amount of hair as I did back then!!…). They were promoting their 10th album “Legacy” which was released in August of this year. Follow them on praying-mantis.com

By the time Rock Goddess hit the stage the venue had filled up nicely. Jodie started their set with the opening remark of ‘do you like my trousers?’ which had one tartan leg and one black leg. This seemed to fall on the deaf ears of the audience as it gave muted replies from them. Anyway this didn’t dampen the moment and they opened with ‘Satisfied the Crucified’ from their self titled album released in 1983. Following this with ‘God Be With You’ from their ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ album. The third song of the set was ‘Heartache’ again from their self titled album. Then they played ‘Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right’ a new song which will probably be featured on the bands forthcoming new album which it is believed to be titled ‘Unfinished Business’.

The band carried on with what was to be a fifteen song set list and they finished off their set with their classic ‘Heavy Metal Rock ‘n’ Roll’ song. This had most of us in the audience singing along to.

The encore comprised of two songs, ‘My Angel’ and ‘Love is Bitch’.

Tracey in particular was again in fine form showing us all the classic poses and facial expressions that we love from a heavy metal band. Even disproving all the myths that ladies don’t drink lager from a can..!!!

What an excellent night of ‘old school’ style heavy metal performances and a great turn out for a Thursday night at the O2 Academy Islington,
