Interview with: Carlos Saione (Painside) (Guitarist)
Myglobalmind: Hi guys, firstly i would like to take a minute to thank you from all of the staff and readers of myglobalmind webzine for answering a few questions for us, and also to congratulate you on signing with Inner Wound Recordings.
Myglobalmind: As you probably know, we here at myglobalmind really enjoyed the new album, have you been happy with the general feedback you have received so far?
Carlos: Feedback had been great so far and the album is not out yet, so we couldn’tbe happier! We expect fan reaction to grow even more once it is released and the buzz is on the streets. But so far, it’s been awesome and really encouraging!
Myglobalmind: Can you share some information with our readers about how PAINSIDE came to be in it’s current form?
Carlos: There is not much mystery in it, really. Everyone in the band sort of new
each other from the scene here for a couple of years and we always wanted to
do something together, but the right opportunity was never there. Once me
and Guilherme left our older band called Reckoning and decided to form somethingnew, everyone else just appeared at the right place, at the right time haha. We got together, jammed and the chemistry was there!
Myglobalmind: Your combination of some classic metal and newer metal styles has given the band quite a unique sound, was it a conscious decision to create music in this style or did you guys just get together and let it come naturally?
Carlos: It’s more of a natural thing, really. Actually, everyone in the band listensto different things and metal styles, so it kind of flows into our music naturally, I guess. I don’t think it would sound very good if we forced ourselves to sound like somebody else too haha.
Myglobalmind: I see that you guys have gotten together with Jean Dolabella of SEPULTURA to write and record a theme song for up & coming UFC fighter Ronys Torres, care to tell us how that came about?
Carlos: It was something that happened by accident actually. Since we had a short time to record and deliver the song and our drummer wasn’t going to be able to record it at the time, we thought of Jean, not only because he’s a fantastic drummer and musician, but also due to his distinctive groovy style, which was something the song needed. We got in touch through our producer, he flew over to Rio de Janeiro right after New Year’s and just nailed it perfectly!
Myglobalmind: The album has a few great guest stars, do you know these guys personally, or if not, how did the opportunity arise to work with them.
Carlos: Actually we’ve known Gus Monsanto and Renato Tribuzy for a couple of years and their participation just came naturally. We wanted them to do different things on our record than on their bands. Renato sings in a ballad and Gus in a song with a touch of hard rock, so it worked better than we though in the end.
As for Chris Boltendhal, we’ve been Grave Digger fans since we were kids, so to have him sing in one of our songs and like the material he was singing on was an honor.
Myglobalmind: Can you tell us a bit about the writing process for the album, do you guys usually start with music first or lyrics first?
Carlos: We don’t really follow a formula. We kind of go with the flow of the
moment. For this album, the songs were done by me and Guilherme and the other just contributed more with arrangement ideas. Most of the times I come up with a full song or maybe a couple of riffs or Guilherme will do the same. Sometimes we work around a vocal melody. It’s a mixed process in the end haha.
Myglobalmind: Do you guys have many live shows coming up, and are you planning on touring overseas anytime soon?
Carlos: We’re waiting for the album release, but we have a couple of shows in mind regarding Brazil in the coming months. We would love to be able to play to our fans in the US and Europe, but that requires more planning, so we just have to wait and see how things play out.
Myglobalmind: Guys, thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview, i would like to wish you and the rest of PAINSIDE the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Before we finish is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans?
Carlos: Hope we can see you all on tour singing with us as loud as you can! Thank you guys for the support and Spread the pain!
