METAFICTION is my first experience with Poland based prog metallers VOTUM, and I must admit, if I hadn’t received a promo version of this album I probably would have chased this one up either. After listening to this album on repeat for a day and a half now I must say how glad I am to have turned on to these guys.

The brand of prog metal displayed on METAFICTION is very haunting and emotional, with color and feeling given a much higher priority than musical showing-off. Honestly, this is some of the most memorable music I have listened to in a long time. There is a running story throughout the album’s seven tracks, which when listened to combined with a lyric sheet tell a very deep, sad story. But unlike some other prog concept releases, you don’t need to follow the story to appreciate the music if you don’t want to.

The overall vibe of this album is comparative to artists like PORCUPINE TREE, ANATHEMA and OPETH, but just because VOTUM aren’t a household name don’t think for a second that they can’t run with the big boys. In fact METAFICTION is so close to being as good as anything PORCUPINE TREE have ever released.

Hopefully the second album from VOTUM can help spread this band through the stratosphere as they really deserve as much recognition and respect as any of the other bands I mentioned earlier in the review. I suggest to anyone into atmospheric, deep, smartly written prog music to seek this out immediately, me, I’m off to try and dig up the band’s first album, 2008’s TIME MUST HAVE A STOP
