Fans of the all-too-briefly-lived Deep Purple Mk 4 are in for a treat. The band has released a trailer for the upcoming Gettin’ Tighter DVD/Blu-ray, set for release in early 2011. The new film will feature previously unseen concert and interview footage of the band in the last year before their 1976 breakup.
For guitar fans, the film as a rare chance to watch guitarist Tommy Bolin at the top of his game. Bolin joined the band in 1975, replacing Ritchie Blackmore, who had gone on to form Rainbow. Bolin had recently raised the profile of his own resume with a stint in the James Gang. Though he was in Purple for less than a year, he put an indelible stamp on the history of hard rock with his performance on Come Taste the Band.
Deep Purple would break up in March, 1976. Gettin’ Tighter captures the creative highs and dangerous excesses of that final year.
