Ever heard of the Italian progressive metal band DOMINICI? If not, their biggest claim to fame is that their lead singer Charlie Dominici, was once in DREAM THEATER before James LaBrie, and spent enough time with them to record their debut album WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE. It’s interesting then, that once Charlie Dominici decided to move on from the DOMINICI project the rest of the members of the band chose to saty together and get a new singer. Obviously, a name change was going to be needed after losing the member that they were initially named after, so the band settled on SOLID VISION.
The only real difference I noticed from this and the days under the DOMINICI moniker, is that the new album SACRIFICE is a little less majestic and bombastic, but also a little heavier and more aggressive. Don’t worry though, the base sound is still very much in the vein of modern progressive metal, but the sound has been ever so slightly altered to ensure the band stands up on its own ground. Elements of pure melodic metal, symphonic metal and even a smattering of thrash metal all find their way onto this album and each time something a little different comes up it really is a treat to the ears and helps to solidify this as one of the surprise frontrunners for the 2010 progressive metal crown.
Highlights come often if you’re a fan of modern progressive metal, but for a true album strong point look no further than either APOCALYPSE or FREEDOM FROM PAIN, both of which show a songwriting quality usually only expected from the big boys.
With SACRIFICE, SOLID VISION have shown that they have what it takes to compete on the main stage of prog metal, and I’m sure as soon as they settle a deal with a new label these guys will be going from strength to strength without a fuss. If you are into this type of music, make sure you don’t miss out on what will be one of your favorite albums of the year.
