A little bit of everything punk flies at you when you hear the new CD from the American punk band American Speedway. Punk and Roll from the Philadelphia area, the quarter made a splash in 2008 with their debut record Ship of Fools. They also hit the Sirius Satellite Radio’s Punk Channel with their hit single “One Foot In, One Foot Out” back in Summer of 2008. Because we like some variety in our lives, I still love to get into some punk once in a while and I like my Punk with some aggression. American Speedway provides just that.

Fast uptempo with a little of Hard Rock licks are prevalent here on their second album A Bigger Boat, the guys here kick the chair instantly with the opening razor sharp “Howl  Ya Doin” and the tenaciously attitude driven nonsense of vibe of “Unreasonable Things”. Some other high stakes run hard with “Ready To Roll” with an almost Motorhead impersonation on the fire burner guitar riff. Heck you can say that for all of the full blast speed demon songs on this short 30 minute record. But who cares I like it regardless.

These guys are a bunch of grunts as I like to call them, they hit up your local bars and towns rocking the night away and just having a good old town. Is the sound anything new from the typical Punk these days? no of course not although the up tempo beats of each song really carries the band above and beyond from your average punk rock band. They provide some solid musicianship on different levels, the guitar the drumming are both insanely fast and provide a blitz of melody and punkish destructiveness.  Is hard to judge a record like this when you know damn well the genre has a pretty well defined sound, but for what it’s worth I thought it was a nice record to blast in the background or jack up when your driving down the highway doing 80. Wait don’t do that, but if you do be careful…..Check it out.
