Instrumental, moody post-rock has been a genre that has seemed to flourish over the last five years or so, and while there have been a few real standout albums; a lot of it really does sound the same. Australian post-rockers SLEEPMAKESWAVES are one of the latest groups to join the fold and their debut album …AND SO WE DESTRYED EVERYTHING shows that these guys are capable with matching the big bands in the genre.

I can see SLEEPMAKESWAVES being one of those bands that people will either totally love, or don’t like at all, so those that aren’t into this type of music are advised to steer clear. For those that do though there’s plenty here to sink your teeth into. A surprise addition of some trumpet and a spoken word section during A GAZE BLANK AND PITILESS AS THE SUN gives the album a much needed spark roughly the half-way mark. Aside from that though, the album remains in largely familiar territory that takes the common post-rock vibe, imbues it with some shoegaze and even a little bit of a chamber music feel too. Fans of bands like GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU and TRISTEZA should find enough here to keep them listening throughout the entire runtime.

I will admit that this sort of music isn’t really my cup of tea, but I do know the difference between the good and bad acts of the genre. SLEEPMAKESWAVES sound about as good as anything else I’ve heard in this style and while this album is unlikely to re-enter my CD player anytime soon I have no problem at all recommending it to people into this type of music.
