I was introduced to FEN a couple of years ago when Ripple Music sent me a copy of the band’s fourth album TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM. I am still yet to delve into the band’s earlier work, but judging by what others were saying at the time and the information available to me in promotional material TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM was actually a departure from their usual style with a much more mellow and largely acoustic sound. I personally really enjoyed that previous album and compared to the quitter moments from groups like PORCUPINE TREE and OPETH.
Clearly this new release OF LOSING INTEREST is closer to the band’s trademark as it’s a much more electric and energetic vibe throughout and even a bit metally in places too. I must say though that I am a little disappointed with the end result this time around. On the outer it’s a pretty decent modern progressive rock record, but it lacks the raw emotion and smothering vibe of the band’s previous release and comes across as a much less personal and less moving album. OF LOSING INTEREST still offers up some enjoyable moments, with the funk-rock infused THE GLOVE being the best of the best. There’s also some joy to be found in the TOOL inspired verses of NICE FOR THREE DAYS and the catchy SNAKE PATH. PILOT PLANT offers up one of the more moving moments of the album is the closest track on offer here to sound of the previous record.
Fans of modern sounding progressive rock music will surely find bits and pieces of this album that they really enjoy, and it’s probably a bit better even than I am making it sound, but for me it’s a bit of a let-down after the deep and moving previous album TRAILS OUT OF GLOOM.
