Exclusive Interview With Octavio Custodio (Drums) (Disaffected)

Interviewed By ZeeZee (Senior Staff Writer) Myglobalmind Webzine

Myglobalmind: Howdy, firstly thanks very much for taking some time to answer a few questions for My Global Mind and our readers.

Octavio: Hi! Thank-you for your interest in Disaffected! We are very honored to answer My Global Mind.

Myglobalmind: For our readers that may be discovering you for the first time, could you tell us a little bit about who DISAFFECTED are, and how did the band begin?

Octavio: Disaffected is a band that started off in the early nineties in Portugal. The band started when two members got to meet each other through an add. They soon started recruiting other band members and Disaffected slowly took shape. From that very first line-up only guitarist Sergio is still around.

Myglobalmind: I notice that there was a long spell between your new album and your debut for SkyFall records way back in 1995. Can you share with us a little bit about why the wait was so long, and what did you guys all get up to in the time away from this band?

Octavio: Well shortly after Vast was released Sergio had a near fatal motorbike accident. He was in a coma for quite some time and everyone had pretty much given all hope in ever having back – doctors included! Nevertheless, against all odds, he slowly began to get better. In 2006 he felt confident enough to start playing the guitar again. As such he called up the rest of the band members to see who was interested in a come back. Since not all “Vast” members where available, 2 new band members had to be invited. By that time the idea was just to play “Vast” again live and have some fun. When that was accomplished everyone started talking of another album. So we got to work and “Rebirth” slowly took shape.

Myglobalmind: Portugal isn’t one of the first countries people would think of when talking about Progressive Death Metal, or even any sort of Metal really, what’s the Portuguese metal scene like at the moment?

Octavio: Portugal has an awesome amount of great bands. Progressive death metal included. Unfortunately, that does not mean our metal scene is also awesome. In fact, at the moment, it is pretty weak. The problem, of course, is our financial crisis. People have less money in there pockets for CDs, gigs, magazines, etc. As such all the bands are suffering with low attendances at gigs and weak sales. Hopefully we will all work our ways out of this mess.

Myglobalmind: Have you been well received in your homeland, or are you finding more interest from abroad?

Octavio: Yes. We have been received pretty well both in Portugal and abroad. It has been great to read all the great reviews. All those years of hard work and sacrifice were all worth it!

Myglobalmind: Congratulations on signing with Massacre Records for your new album REBIRTH. Can you tell us a bit about how that agreement came to be?

Octavio: After we finished recording “Rebirth” we were pretty sure we had something really good on our hands. As such we sent a copy of our CD to a few record labels, Massacre Records included. We immediately had a few proposals back to study. All things considered, Massacre Records was the best deal. We were really honored to sign with them and figure along an outstanding roster of bands as Massacre Records have. Everything has been working out really well. We are very happy.

Myglobalmind: I’m not sure if you had a chance to read the review I did for REBIRTH, but I personally thought it as a fantastic record and one of the best Prog/Death albums I’ve heard this year by a long way. Have you been happy with the general feedback you have received about the album so far?

Octavio: Yes. We did read your review. Thank-you very much. It was a fantastic review. Once again we felt very honored. Fortunately almost everyone has more or less agreed with you. We have had some really good reviews. You cannot imagine how important it is for us to feel that all those years of trying to get back on our feet were worth it. It was so hard to be reborn again. But with support such as yours every minute of that effort was worth it!

Myglobalmind: Have you guys been playing many live shows since the release of REBIRTH? If so how has it been getting back into the groove of gigging after so much time away?

Octavio: We have been promoting “Rebirth” both in Portugal and in Spain. This week we will be playing at Vagos Open Air, Portugal´s biggest metal festival. We will be sharing the stage with monsters such as Over Kill, At The Gates, Coroner, Arch Enemy, Nasum, and many more. We are really looking forward to that! After VOA we should have another hand full of gigs in Portugal. We are still considering a mini tour in Central Europe in December. Hope it all works out well!

Myglobalmind: What’s your favourite track on the new album? Can you go into a little bit of detail about the lyrics to some of these songs?

Octavio: Ouch! That’s a hard one! All these songs are special for us in different ways. They all tell the tale of all our hardships during these years before our comeback. The lyrics metaphorically describe that hard road back, hence the record title. In any case, since the first song we put together for this record was “The rebirth of…”, it should probably deserve the attention of being “favorite”. At least it got to be the video clip song!

Myglobalmind: So what’s next for DISAFFECTION? Is there any plans to start working on another album or do you think that REBIRTH may have been more of a one-off?

Octavio: We really want to continue writing and recording. “Rebirth” will have a successor. Hopefully it wont take another 17 years for that…

Myglobalmind: Do you have any tours or big shows coming up that you’d like to tell people about?

Octavio: Vagos Open Air! That is sure to be one hell of a show!

Myglobalmind: Once again, thanks heaps for giving us a bit of your time. On behalf of all the staff and the readers here at My Global Mind, I wish you all the best for the future. Before we finish up, is there anything you would like to add? The final statement is all yours….

Octavio: Thank-you very much! We really have no words in which to express all our gratitude for your review and for this interview. In means so much for us! Hope you keep up your great work in promoting metal world wide and hope your readers keep having such a great reference to check up. All the best.
