Halloween with My Friend Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper made his presence known in New Jersey when he thrilled a packed venue a week prior to Halloween at the Mayo Center for Performing Arts in Morristown. Alice’s faithful arrived in full force and in full make-up, to enjoying songs from his 35+ year career.

For the last ten years or so, Alice has come to NY or NJ around Halloween to perform. I’m not really sure if that’s planned for some sick Halloween ritual or just coincident. Either way, it’s something I look forward too. As expected this evening, Alice showcased his extraordinary catalogue of music. In a very energetic performance, he played a combination of songs, from classics like “Schools Out,” “Under My Wheels,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” to newer songs like “Dirty Diamonds,” “ Bite Your Face Off,” and “Caffeine”

The tour dubbed Raise the Dead Tour lives up to it name with no shortage of freaks and ghouls performing along side of Alice with whips, crutches, swords, a strait-jacket and of course a guillotine. Even Alice’s wife gets into the act as a psychopathic nurse who tries to medicate and stabs him and then has his head cut off.

Highlights for me were, “House of Fire,” “Hey Stoopid,” “Man Behind the Mask,” and “Feed my Frankenstein,” where Alice slips on a gas mask and transforms in a 10 foot monster that stalk his band.

A break from the macabre comes as Alice pays tribute to some of his dead friends; Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and Keith Moon by covering “Break on Through,” “Revolution,” “Foxy Lady,” and “My Generation.” I can only assume that these songs will appear on his pending cover CD due out March 2014.

His band is tight and includes the exceptional musicianship of Ryan Roxy, Tommy Henriksen and Orianthi on guitar, Chuck Garric on bass and Glen Sobel on drums.

All in all I couldn’t think of any better way to celebrate Halloween than with my friend Alice. If Alice is playing in your area, be sure to check him out and see what I considered to be a fantastic show.
