Every band when releasing a new album always says that their current album is the best they have ever done. Primal Fear can definitely say that without any irony....

When people ask me if there are any bands out now that are reminiscent of old school heavy metal there is typically one band that comes to mind first for me to recommend. That band is Primal Fear. After nearly 20 years in the metal world, there are few bands that are as clearly devoted to being a metal band and creating music that is some of the best offered with each release and get better and better with every album. Formed in 1997 by ex-Gamma Ray vocalist Ralf Scheepers and vocalist/bassist of Sinner Mat Sinner the duo has forged one of the most important heavy metal catalogs in recent time. Proving yet again that the German metal scene is one of the most superior, the band is back with their 10th studio release Delivering the Black which could easily have been called Delivering the Metal.

Every band when releasing a new album always says that their current album is the best they have ever done. Primal Fear can definitely say that without any irony. Playing with a vengeance and passion, Delivering the Black is easily their heaviest and most mature album out of an already incredible run of recordings. Having masterfully melded the best elements of Power Metal with a more traditional metal sound (think Judas Priest) the band have created a sound all their own. On past releases their influences have been a little more obvious, but on this new album they have stepped to the forefront of their sound and created something 100% Primal Fear. With tracks like “Rebel Faction,” “Alive and On Fire,” “One Night In December,” and “Never Pray For Justice” Primal Fear have created the best album ever. With the duel guitar work of Magnus Karlsson and Alex Beyrodt creating intense interplay between each other, the propulsive bass of Sinner, the amazing drum work of Randy Black, and of course the stunning vocals of Scheepers the band are seemingly untouchable in the metal world right now.

Yet again Primal Fear have demonstrated why they are one of the first (if not the first) true metal bands that I will instantly suggest my friends to check out. Delivering the Black is a stunning album from the first note to the last. This is an easy contender for album of the year coming out the gate of 2014. If it is any indication of what the rest of the year holds for metal releases, this one is going to be a stellar year for us metalheads. Do not hesitate to pick this one up. Whether you are a long time fan or new to the band, this is a must have for metal fans across the world. I give it 10 out of 10.
