Another metal night in The Big Apple, another anticipated gig as the Portuguese Gothic Metallers Moonspell rocked the Gramercy Theatre with a touch wonder and power. The “America Noir” tour began January 31st in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and also brought along one of the Symphonic Metal leading ladies in Liv Kristine from Leave’s Eyes as well as Atrocity, led by Liv’s husband Alexander Krull.

Moonspell has had quite a consistent career and by many they are one of the premier acts in the Gothic Metal arena, so this specific date and tour makes a real highlight for fans of the band, and judging by the crowd in NYC this night, it proved quite positively for the Portuguese outfit.

The lighting was particular a high note of the evening as is not typical with Gramercy, it can be very hit and miss, so a real  good effort by all bands, enhanced lighting gave the evening a spark and touch of wonder.

Atrocity kicked things off and for some of you already familiar with our mag, we covered their live gig in London opening for Leave’s there not that long ago while the band embarked on a short UK run, we also ran an interview with Alexander Krull. A tight  Metal outfit that gives Krull a chance to do he’s own thing aside of he’s role in Leave’s Eyes. If you missed the interview with Atrocity, make sure you read it below to give you a better background on their music and their style. Read Here

Next up was Leave’s Eyes who is on tour supporting their new effort “Symphonies of The Night”, the band’s 5th studio album. Liv’s Kristine’s vocals are the glue of this band, yes they are Symphonic Metal, yes they’re are many bands in this crowded arena already, but these guys have maintain a great reputation through the years and are one of the leaders in the genre.

They opened up the night with one of the tracks from their new one titled “Galswintha”, an oldie in “Take The Devil in Me” followed by more solid numbers from their new record in “Symphony of the Night”. The band had a short setlist but incorporated a few numbers from their past catalog to sweeten the performance. Overall a great mood setter for the headliner in Moonspell, Liv’s was on top of her game as usual vocally, and the rest of the band kept churning out a steady plow since we checked them out only a short time ago in London. As mentioned earlier the lighting was unusually great adding even more of an epic flare to their performance.

Finally Moonspell takes over and brings an aura of darkness and haunting melodies that has made them a staple of the genre. Front man Fernando Ribeiro sounds sharp here on this night, and guitarist Ricardo Amorim is touches all the right chords as well. The band here is supporting their 2012 release Alpha Noir, hence the name of the tour as well. They opened the night with the opening song from their recent record in “Axis Mundi”, the crowd gets into the groove right away and the night keeps on flashing before your eyes before you even know is getting towards the end of their set. After torching through other oldie classics from their back catalog, courtesy of “Night Eternal”, “Opium” and “Scorpion Flower”, the band closes out the night with “New Tears Eve” a dedication to the late Peter Steele, bass player and main composer of the legendary Gothic Metal band Type O Negative, a touching number closing this great night filled with mood swings, dark haunting melodies and colorful atmosphere. Check the dates below to see if you can catch these guys on the remaining days of their tour. You won’t be disappointed.
