Have you ever listened to an album that has many elements you love in a band, yet not really be blown away by it? It doesn’t happen often, but every once in a while I will listen to an album that reminds me of bits and pieces of bands I love combined with other elements I appreciate in my music yet I find myself not getting drawn into it. Sadly Massacre Records band God’s Army AD seems to fit in that category.

Their s/t debut for the aforementioned label has some underlying potential, yet seems to fall slightly short of metal supremacy. Musically they’re a mash-up of thrash meets NWOBHM. I hear elements of bands like Shok Paris and Laaz Rockitt melding together heavy and melodic sensibility, and a brash in your face approach of bands like Whiplash and Metal Church. Vocally you get a less Germanic sounding voice of Bonfire with a slight sneer ala Blitz from Overkill. Strong vocals, blazing guitar work, thunderous rhythms, yet no one song jumps out at me and grabs my ears.

I really wanted to love this album, and perhaps in time I will. There are so many things about it that are right up my alley. After 3-4 listens it did start to grow on me so it will be one I return to in a different frame of mind. It certainly has an appeal that should resonate with most metal fans, so I encourage you to give it a shot. Right now I’m giving it 6 out of 10; however I can see it potentially moving up another spot, possibly two in time. We shall see.
