Consisting of Steve “Lips” Kudlow (vocals, guitar), Robb Reiner (drums) and Chris Robertson (bass), Anvil has released fifteen studio albums, and has been cited as having influenced many notable heavy metal groups, including Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax and Metallica.

You may recall the 2008 documentary film, Anvil! The Story of Anvil, directed by the screenwriter and former Anvil roadie, Sacha Gervasi. Upon its release, the film garnered critical acclaim from many major publications, and has since brought the band renewed recognition, including opening slots with AC/DC and Saxon. Appearances at both major heavy metal festivals, including Download, Loud Park and Hellfest, and independent music festivals like Bumbershoot and SXSW, also followed the release of the film. Reviewers described Anvil as a pioneering hair metal band that was popular in the 1980s but then faded into obscurity in the 1990s. The band however refused to stop playing, recording and gigging and as such the documentary elevated them back into the mainstream rock scene and numerous tours later, they find themselves supporting U.D.O. in the UK.

Lindsey Appleton caught up with Rob, Lips and Chris after their set.

Chris – Playing Sofia was amazing, a great venue.

Lips – Budapest, Switzerland, we played huge stages in front of massive crowds.

MGM – WHAT KIND OF THINGS HAVE YOU BEEN GETTING UP TO ON YOUR DAYS OFF?

Robb – We went to this little restaurant in Arles France, where Van Gogh lived & painted, it was a great experience for me, to see his work.

Chris – We have also seen some great Anvil monuments, we saw one in Helsinki. We also visited the Swords in in Stavanger, Norway.

MGM – SINCE THE DVD HAVE YOU SEEN A RISE IN YOUNGER FOLLOWERS OF ANVIL, AND IF SO WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

Lips – Yes its great kids are the next generation, they can understand a lot better and can see what actually went on, and because of this we have had such a great response from our fans.

MGM – DO YOU THINK CONSTANTLY TOURING HELPS YOUR FANBASE TO GROW, AND KEEPS YOU FRESH IN YOUR FANS MINDS?

Robb – We keep coming back and do what we do. We love to play, we love to tour, touring and keeping our name out there it’s our way of showing the fans we will keep coming back for them and in turn they come back and support us, it’s great. They tell their friends and in doing so numbers grow.

MGM – WHAT DID YOU GUYS THINK TO BE PLAYING THIS SIZE STAGE TONIGHT, ITS NOT THE USUAL ONE WE SEE YOU ON, WE ARE USED TO SEEING YOU ON BIGGER.

Robb – It’s been the smallest one so far on tour.

Lips – But we had a great turn out, we saw a lot of familiar faces and a lot of new ones so all in all was good fun.

MGM – CAN WE EXPECT AN ANVIL HEADLINE TOUR SOON?

Robb – Yes at the end of the year

MGM – WHAT ABOUT ANOTHER DVD, A SEQUEL TO THE LAST ONE?

Robb – We would like to, so much has happened since the last one, a sequel would be awesome so never say never.

MGM – WHAT ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO DO AFTER THE GIG TONIGHT?

Lips – look for a fish and chip shop, man am I craving some proper traditional English fish and chips man.

MGM – WHEN TOURING WHICH AREA DO YOU PREFER TO PLAY HERE IN THE UK?

Robb – I like to play in the North of England, the crowds are more energised.

Chris – Bloody mental up here I love it.

MGM – CHRIS WATCHING YOU PLAY, IT’S LIKE YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PART OF THE BAND, ITS NOT LIKE YOU WERE EVER THE NEW BOY, HOW DOES IT FEEL FOR YOU?

Chris – We are like family you know, we just gel, there’s no getting rid of me now hahaha.

MGM – YOU HAVE JUST COME ALONG AND BOOM IT’S LIKE YOU FIT ITS REALLY STRANGE FOR ME WHO HAS SEEN THE BASS PLAYERS IN THE BAND THAT HAVE COME AND GONE, BUT IT REALLY IS LIKE YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FROM THE START.

Chris – That’s how it feels for me as well, even Lips will say do you remember when we played here on such and such a date and I will have to remind him, I wasn’t in the band then, so yea to the others it must feel like I’ve always been there for them as well.

CHEERS FOR TALKING TO US GUYS AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AGAIN AT THE END OF THE YEAR WHEN YOU COME BACK!
