Graham Bonnet is a name synonymous in the world of metal and hard rock. As one of the voices of the legendary band Rainbow alone would propel him to stardom and a hall of fame worthy legacy, but he has also had an excellent solo career, as well as popping up on albums by such guitar luminaries as Michael Schenker and Chris Impellitteri, not to mention his post Rainbow work with Alcatrazz. He has one of the most distinctive voices in rock music, a combo of soulful blues yet has the capacity to belt out some fiery metallic style screams. Bonnet also has a keen ear for unique vocal melodies and the ability to write melodic songs in varying styles.
It’s been some time since he has released a proper solo album, and now he is back with The Graham Bonnet Band, a collection of musicians who he has been touring hard and heavy with the last year, releasing their debut album entitled “The Book”. It is two CD’s chock full of awesomeness. The first disc is all new material, some of the best music he has done in years. It contains some brilliantly hard rocking material like the album opener “Into the Night” that is a great representation of what Graham has been about his whole career: delivering hard edged guitar heavy rock music with keyboards mingled throughout and his powerful and loud voice steering it all along.
It continues on with tracks like “Dead Man Walking,” “Earth’s Child (I Am Your Son),” and “California Air.” As if this massive collection of killer new songs wasn’t enough, there is a second disc of re-recorded songs from Bonnet’s career that is beyond unreal. His voice is still as amazing as ever, and the band he has put together (including Mark Zonder on drums, Beth-Ami Heavenstone on bass, Conrado Pesinato on guitar, and Jimmy Waldo on keyboards on CD1 and Angelo Vafeiadis on CD2) flow seamlessly through an almost 50-year career of top notch music.
Graham Bonnet is at the top of his game on The Book. His voice is as strong as ever, the songs are as classic as ever, and he proves that age is just a number, performing at this high a level at his age is nothing short of amazing. In a time when singers half his age struggle to maintain their abilities he makes it sound like it’s nothing at all. If you have ever been a fan of his, this is an album that has been a long time coming.
