Clutching my tray of ‘Dead Daisies’ cupcakes (I always bring a gift when interviewing anyone), I entered that beacon of rock n roll heaven ‘The Hatchet Inn’ to prepare (e.g bite my nails) in anticipation of interviewing Deen Castronovo and Marco Mendoza.

Ahhhhhhhh…once again, why did I worry! These Dead Daisies chaps are just, well, jolly lovely and a right good giggle too! My cupcakes went down a storm!

Onward to the gig…the vibe outside the 02 Bristol Academy, was, as usual, a happy excited one. This I am starting to expect every time the Dead Daisies play. Waiting by the tour bus for my interview with them, I was once again astonished at how great they are with the fans that shyly hung back to see if they could get a peek of Marco, Deen, John, Doug or David. The Daisies ALWAYS say hello, are always courteous in their connection with their fans and genuinely just love the interaction with everyone.

As a rock n roll punter, the Daisies deliver as soon as they hit the stage and boy do they do that with aplomb! Bounding onto the stage like a bat out of hell, The Dead Daisies make their presence know, leaving no doubt that EVERYONE needs to sit up and take notice.

Opening with ‘Resurrected’ from the brand new ‘Burn It Down’ album…the band and the crowd exploded with excitement and continue to do so through the whole set, like a freight train on rock n roll acid. Doug Aldrich was most definitely on rock god form with Californian golden hair flying and some screaming guitar to boot.

These guys are rock royalty and they don’t need to prove anything, but prove themselves they do time and time again……and they LOVE it! John Corabi is a most excellent frontman and is the perfect dude to entertain the crowd…..fun and with the perfect gravelly voice, he is just the ticket for this crowd!

This superb set moves onward through the stomping beat of ‘Rise Up’ and that call for rock n roll tribal union sing along of ‘Make Some Noise’ which never fails to please the punters.

‘Mexico’ is the perfect party song and with a little teasing from John about the English weather, made us all proud of the fact that Bristol was sunny that day and not pissing down! ‘Dead and Gone’ and ‘Judgement Day’, which are two of my favorites from the new album, for which I gave 10 out of 10 in my review, did not disappoint and sounded just as good, if not better, live.

The guys gave us their regular taste of a couple of covers with ‘Bitch’ Rolling Stones and ‘Helter Skelter’ Beatles …..The Dead Daisies have covered two of my most favorite songs ever, ‘Fortunate Son’ and ‘American Band’ and I have to say I listen to them more than the originals …..they cover songs AND they kick ass while they are doing so, live or in the studio!

With new member on the drums, Deen Castronovo, plus those grooviest of cats Marco Mendoza, Doug Aldrich, John Corabi and David Lowy, the line-up of the Dead Daisies feels good, it feels legendary and it feels joyous, and boy couldn’t we do with a bit of rock n roll happiness these days, the world has gone bloody bonkers!

With the ‘Burn It Down’ tour selling out in the UK and Europe, The Dead Daisies will be heading back here in the summer, gee whizz they must love us as much as we love them, they have announced a full UK & EU Summer Tour which sees them perform a mix of festivals and headline dates as well as shows with The Scorpions, Guns n Roses, and Joe Satriani.

If you haven’t already checked them out …..all I can say is DO IT, you won’t regret it! Get yourself a little bit of classic rock heaven for the modern era.
