Geoff Tate is one of the most incredible singers of all time in Heavy Metal music, famous for being the original frontman of the progressive band Queensryche. Since he parted ways with the legendary American band, he has formed his current project Operation: MindcrimeSweet Oblivion is a new landscape for Tate that was created by the talented Simone Mularoni, the mastermind of the Italian progressive metal band DGM. The self titled debut album of this new project includes ten fresh tunes that seem to be the perfect occasion for Tate to come back to a style that he made famous with his old band.

Sweet Oblivion gives a modern twist of the melodic metal scene of the nineties and this project will be a pleasant surprise expects the fans of this genre. The band is a composed by three exceptional musicians from Italy that play homage to the progressive metal scene of the Queensryche era and the presence of Geoff Tate takes the material to the next level. Geoff might not have the vocal range and power that he used to have in the past, but his control and technique for which he is known for is still intact. The compositions are perfectly compatible with the melodic metal of the nineties, but there are many new elements that give them a modern profile.

From the opener “True Colors” to the exceptional title track, the band brings back memories of “Empire” and “Operation Mindcrime” and the whole album follows the same path. The record offers a lot of flavors, with some outstanding tunes, like the heavy ambiented “Hide Away” or “Behind Your Eyes” with a special work on keyboards. There is also a ballad “Disconnect” that leaves a bittersweet effect to the listener, but the most outstanding tune would be “The Deceiver” with exceptional riffs from guitars and keyboards in a perfect harmony. There is not a bad tune in this album and the band is composed by musicians of a huge professional level. The keyboards are in a thin line between the classic and modern progressive metal and the work on the bass and drums is fundamental and impeccable. The amazing work on the guitars at the melodic and rhythm compartment together with the great interpretation of the lyrics by the legendary frontman are the most important elements to consider in this new release.

There has been done a respectable work on this project and the band members have put all their love and dedication to the music. Unfortunately, it could sound like a cover band of Queensryche to a big part of the audience and most of them prefer the original and not the tribute projects. On the other hand, there in a great quality in composition, registration and production of “Sweet Oblivion” that can’t be ignored and for sure this record will satisfy the fans of the progressive metal genre that feel nostalgic for the glorious days of Queensryche.
