Music, at its best, is a time machine. An album, a song, can transport back to a time of great memories, great friends, sad times, and tragic loss. It can remind you of so much, whether you want it to or not. Therefore, for me, when I hear something new that taps straight into that nostalgic vibe, if it is done properly, and without ripping it off and poking fun at it, I can love it as much as I do the classics. That same nostalgia is born again and may even create new memories.
Caught In Action’s Devil’s Tango is the perfect example of new nostalgia. They tap straight into that sound of the late 1980s AOR, montage style of music. The sound of summer, convertibles, smelling of suntan lotion, and beautiful people on the beach. It sets that perfect idyllic soundtrack. The members of the band have been floating around the Swedish scene for three decades now, so that explains the quality of the songs and performances. Devil’s Tango is the band’s debut, and despite not breaking any new ground sonically, they have certainly recorded a stunning album of classic-sounding AOR that will appeal to any fan of the genre. It captures the spirit so perfectly you’d almost swear you owned this album back in the day. With tracks like “It Was Always You,” “New York City,” and “If Only” you’ve got the perfect soundtrack for the summer of 2022.
This album has already been out for a little while this year, so it has flown under the radar. If classic AOR is your cup of tea, then you need to find Caught In Action Devil’s Tango. Don’t expect anything to blow your mind, other than the fact that they have managed to tap straight into that sweet, sweet sound of 1987 and brought it back for us old fogies!
