I’ve been a Prog fan for about as long as I’ve been a Metal fan. Both genres have a great many parallels when you get down to it, even beyond the obvious Prog Metal connection. Naysayers claim Prog has no emotion, but those people just aren’t hearing the music the way I am I suppose. Even with layers of technicality, there are still moods and emotions within those songs, there are tales in the words that can move you. Plus, even though I love meat and potatoes music, I also love listening to musicians who are at the top of their game doing what they do best. It’s OK if you don’t like it though. I get it.
From 1983-1997 there was a band called Galaxy in the Netherlands, which started at a very young age, creating music. It wasn’t until just before the demise of the band they finally recorded their debut album, Runaway Men. Upon the breakup, the album was shelved before it could be finalized. All these years later, the band stumbled across the music and decided to finally make it available to the fans, and I am glad for that. As soon as I hit play, I knew immediately I was going to review it. It reminded me so much of bands I already enjoyed like Spock’s Beard, Marillion, and Enchant, fitting perfectly with those bands. Lush musical passages, powerful vocals, brilliant guitar work, mesmerizing tunes, and insightful lyrics. Songs like “In Her Head,” “Answers,” “Runaway Man,” and “Lady of Fire” are perfect demonstrations of just how good this band was.
Hopefully, with the release of Runaway Men, Galaxy will be inspired to create more music. This is the type of Prog Rock that has commercial appeal as well. The songs can impact all types of music lovers. I hope this album is heard by people. This is yet another musical surprise for me this year.
