Syryn – Heads Or Tails – Review

Both Rage and Gorieu can riff and shred with the best of them, the rhythm section drive the songs and the icing on the cake is Voxx’s vox!...

Here’s another from the thriving metal scene in Calgary, Alberta. There must be something in the Bow River water because the metal is flooding our way, make no mistake. Syryn take their influences from most types of metal and it shows because they are adept at it all – even pirate metal! ‘Surrender’ opens with sirens howling (geddit?) Lyxx Rose noodles a bit then the guitarists start with a choppy riff before Sloan Voxx croons over the top – they allow it to build gradually and they’re away on the chorus plus a load of ‘woooooaaah’s’ (a bit too many if I’m honest). ‘Til We Drown’ is an early Maiden-esque roller that gets the head nodding with a wonderful chorus then we get ‘Walk The Plank’ which is pure NWOBHM and pure class foot on the monitor metal. Voxx shows her range on this with band as one giving it large.

‘Sink Or Swim’ continues the good work although it gets jagged and there’s more of those ‘Woooaaah’s’.

It’s ballad time on ‘Madness Becomes Me’ where they make the right atmosphere and Voxx’s operatic vocals soar over some majestic riffage.

‘Fist Full Of Daggers’ has some excellent axework on the intro then it gets heavy with a choppy riff – there’s some death like vocals from someone which adds to the weight. ‘Heads Or Tails’ is a superb slab of melodic metal where the band have added some keys underneath and more of those bloody ‘Woooaaah’s’. Final cut ‘Succubus Queen’ is another power metal beast with Gorieu and Rage giving it large and Voxx again showing what she can do.

Thoroughly enjoyed this – there’s loads going on and as I mentioned before they go through loads of metal genres sometimes in one song. My only criticism is the mix. The guitars could be sharper and the drums crisper but that’s just me being picky because the songs are excellent and really well executed. Both Rage and Gorieu can riff and shred with the best of them, the rhythm section drive the songs and the icing on the cake is Voxx’s vox! If you like ANY sort of metal, then this will appeal. C’mon give these crazy Canucks a go. C’mon the Flames!!

Score: 8/10
