Formed in Portland, Oregon back in 2012 Die Like Gentlemen have been pretty consistent with their releases which I will be seeking out because this is a monster. Opening with the mighty spacey stoner of ‘Guts Of A Beggar’ they immediately highlight the operatic masculine vocals of Adam Alexander which are urgent and powerful.
‘Last Night On Earth’ is doomier and groovier with a real live-in-the-studio feel before ‘Whipping Boy’ gives us some power doom and wonderful guitar leads from Wieber. Rodger’s deep growling bass introduces ‘Infalling Bodies’ for a nearly ten-minute dive into early Sabbath territory and as expected has several parts going from heavy to psych to pure stoner. Things get dark and eerie on ‘In Ruins’ before it opens up and grinds away before ‘Bury Me’ brings a large amount of chug and a furious vocal from Alexander. ‘Letting In The Rain’ starts slowly and gently then builds into a stoner/psych rave then Rodgers it again with a meaty bass intro before he is joined by crashing chords and of we go on another early Sabbath bruiser. The final track ‘Unliving’ for me is the best of the bunch, it is heavy and energetic with some death-like growls and a huge groove.
This is good, full of huge riffs and grooves plus the vocals of Alexander bring a different edge to the songs. Heavy, loud, and raw but with loads of dark melodies and interesting passages. Top-notch metal with a foot in both the past and the present.
