The year 2023 has started with a bang of shows already early in the year. As the cold hopefully begins to wane off some, it opens up the customary runs of typically early spring tours. Tonight we are fortunate to see the Irish American Flogging Molly, led by long-time founder and former Fastway singer Dave King.

The guys played in Huntsville last year around this time and put on a great show then. On this tour, they bring friends in legendary punk rockers Anti-Flag and British Folk band Skinny Lister with them. FM has hit the road on the second leg of their tour in support of their now 7th album “Brooklyn Vegan”. The outfit has become a staple of the Punk scene for some 20 years now and to bolster this cool lineup, you bring another staple of the Punk rock scene, Anti-Flag.

Things begin with Skinny Lister as they waste no time in getting the crowd going, and the British Folk group does a great job of bringing the party and energy, really enjoyed their set. Frontman and guitar player Daniel Heptinstall does well and the rest of the outfit sounds very lively when performing. I got a kick out of watching the double bass in action, pretty cool not something you see veryday live. A band to watch out for and one who hopefully got on some folks radar.

Anti-Flag breaks into the stage with fierce energy, and for their first time playing in Huntsville, they put on a hell of a show. Songs like “The Fight of our Lives”, and “Broken Bones”, all get to deliver with immense purpose. Obviously, classic like “This Is The End (For You My Friend) towards the end of the set is always a crowd favorite. Plenty of crowd surfers on this night, as the mostly packed house, erupts with energy. One thing I will say, the veterans of the scene can bring the Punk angst they are known for, they really know how to get the crowd going. Another excellent performance.

Finally, things get going for Flogging Molly as the charismatic Dave King comes on stage and quickly burst into “Swagger” and Molly favorite “Drunken Lullabies” later in the set. Couldn’t take my eyes off the shiny accordion played by Matt Hensley, a sight to behold. Molly has always been about brotherhood, having a good old fun with a few rounds, and celebrating music. The vibe is consistently positive throughout the night and descends into such FM classics the likes of “What’s Left of the Flag” and “Salty Dog” to round out the encore.

Another successful and enjoyable night for a band that seemingly always finds a way to deliver a great live performance, bring everybody together, and have fun. Not a bad way to start a hopefully Rocking 2023 tour bill as we look forward to what the year holds. If you get a chance to catch the guys live, I suggest you do as it will make for a fun night out with friends.
