It was no mistake that Black Spiders chose the iconic Cart and Horses as the place to play their yearly Patreon show to their devoted fans, because just like the mighty Maiden themselves, the Spiders are as ‘Rock’ as it gets! A bunch of die-hard heavy metal mavericks that would make the Godfather of Metal, Lemmy himself, proud! This band has been described as downright dangerous, and it’s not hard to see why! Their music is relentlessly driven by loud, disorderly guitars that scream to be heard rather than sing. Their lyrics are insubordinate and defiant, fueled by the kind of “fuck you” attitude that sent the venue into a mass of rocking, screaming bodies! This is the kind of music that could start a rebellion and take you over to the dark side with rock fingers held high as you headbang your heart out! It’s not hard to see why the Spiders have such a devoted fan base, as they are the perfect remedy to the current political climate: escapism of the highest order, an invitation to let your hair down and rock your heart out, and rock we did!
As the Spiders launched into their first track, the balls-to-the-wall “Sons of The North,” the title track from their debut album, they ripped into a fierce onslaught of heavy metal mastery that set the venue on fire from the very first sweat-drenched note! With support from glam hair sleaze rockers, Nasty Ratz, who fired up the crowd before the Spiders took to the stage, with frontman Jake Widow casting lasers across the venue! They went down an absolute storm with their own brand of immediately likable nineties-style hair metal that took me right back to those crazy nights of debauchery at the Hellfire Club.
And this might have been a free gig for their devoted fans, but the Spiders certainly didn’t hold back! Not only did they play track after track of their most-loved songs, but they also went right back to their rock roots, playing tunes from all five of their albums! They didn’t just tear up the stage, they obliterated it like a bunch of axe-wielding maniacs. Tight as it gets, they were having nearly as much fun as the audience, and that was one hell of a lot! Tracks like “A Rat is a Rat” with its driving drum sound and ferocious guitars topped off with Pete’s raw vocals went down an absolute storm! The crowd waved their fists in the air, totally absorbed in a heavy metal frenzy! This is a band who clearly love their fans, and frontman Pete wasted no time in sharing how much they appreciate them! Adoration that, judging by the sea of Black Spider t-shirts and the number of fists punching the air, was greatly reciprocated!
The Spiders are rockers of the people! The wild men of rock with a heart of gold! The dynamic between the band and their audience was really lovely to see! And the great music just kept coming! Songs like “Stay Down” were a fierce onslaught of heavy metal mastery that set the venue on fire! “Teenage Knife Gang” was brutal in its intensity with its heavy guitar riffs, total rock genius! After their triumphant shows last year at The Maid of Stone Festival and their victorious performances supporting Oz hellraisers Airbourne, Black Spiders have clearly taken it to another level. This is a band that deserves to be standing shoulder to shoulder with the other hard rock big boys! Their ability as a band to forge forward relentlessly and to consistently deliver great rock’n’roll is clear to see! So, what’s next for Black Spiders? Well, with a new album in the pipeline and this kind of drive and determination, not to mention their ability to knock out the kind of tracks that could make Lemmy himself rock from the grave, anything is possible!
