From Ashes to New is an alternative metal band hailing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, drawing musical influences from genres such as rap, rock, and nu-metal. The band lineup includes Danny Case on lead vocals, multi-instrumentalist Matt Brandyberry on backing vocals, synths, bass, and rhythm guitar, Lance Dowdle on lead guitar, and Mat Madiro on drums.

The band released their fourth studio album, “Blackout,” in July 2023, marking a return after three years since their previous album, “Panic.” Despite reaching number 31 on the UK Rock charts, this position belies the album’s brilliance. The band’s nu-metal roots are prominently displayed, evoking a nostalgic resonance reminiscent of the genre’s early 2000s heyday. Tracks like “Legacy” and “Dead to Me” echo influences akin to Linkin Park, with Case delivering emotive vocals akin to Chester Bennington and Brandyberry’s rap style reminiscent of Mike Shinoda. Madiro’s powerful percussion adds a weighty undertone, enhancing the music’s impact. The band has released several singles from the album, including the synth-infused “Nightmare,” “Until We Break,” “Hate Me Too,” and “Armageddon.”

The latest iteration, “Blackout (Deluxe),” expands upon the original twelve tracks with an additional six songs. Notably, the recent single “Barely Breathing” features Christina Constanza from Against the Current, marking another successful collaboration following their history with female vocalists like Eva Under Fire. The juxtaposition of Case and Constanza’s vocal dynamics enriches the band’s sound while maintaining their signature style. Collaboration continues on “One Foot in the Grave,” featuring Aaron Pauley from Of Mice & Men. The final three tracks present variations of original songs from the 2023 “Blackout” album, concluding with an acoustic rendition of “Hate Me Too.”

My overall impression of the album is overwhelmingly positive, currently on constant rotation and likely to remain so. Initially introduced to the band through their collaborations, I have only recently delved into their individual work. This album has left me eagerly anticipating their live performances. For our US readers, Ashes to New are currently touring, with dates scheduled through June and July. Personally, I look forward to experiencing their live show, although I must exercise patience.

Score: 8/10
