Kicking off with some stellar military-style drumming, this 5-track EP is an exciting teaser for Forlorn Hope’s forthcoming second album. The band’s focus on historical events shines through each track, which explores significant battles or pivotal moments in wars over the centuries. Both this EP and the eagerly anticipated album ‘Valour’ will spotlight recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest military honor awarded to British service members. The EP highlights the heroic stories of six men: Luke O’Connor (‘The Fusilier’), James Brindley-Nicholson (‘Down in Flames’), Edward Unwin (‘Ulysses, 1915’), William ‘Billy’ McFadzean (‘Greater Love Hath No Man’), along with Nevill Coghill and Teignmouth Melville (‘The Last Ride’).
The historical events these men are celebrated for include the Crimean War and the Battle of the Alma, the Battle of Britain, the Gallipoli landings during World War I, other significant events from World War I, and the Anglo-Zulu War.
The EP and upcoming album present a shift from the band’s debut, with changes in both lineup and sound. Notably, keyboards have been replaced by orchestral arrangements composed by guitarist Alexander Bishop.
The result is a solid, well-produced EP that bodes well for the future album. The orchestral elements add a rich layer of depth, giving the band a modern edge that might surprise those expecting a classic NWoBHM sound. While the music will appeal to fans of the genre, it’s also designed to resonate with contemporary tastes, ensuring it doesn’t feel outdated—even if the themes reach back to 1879!
The artwork, centered on the lead single ‘Down in Flames’, tells the gripping story of James Brindley-Nicholson during the Battle of Britain in World War II. Nicholson’s plane, riddled with bullets and engulfed in flames, still managed to engage in a fierce aerial duel with a German fighter, ultimately downing the enemy plane despite the intense damage.
My passion for history is ignited; I’m eagerly anticipating the album’s release.
