Live Gig Review and Photos by Robert Cavuoto
Legendary musician Lenny Kravitz performed live on the Today Show in New York City as part of the Citi Concert Series. He was on the show promoting his latest album, Blue Electric Light, and upcoming US shows in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and a South American Tour. Despite having only an hour of sleep between his appearances at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, September 11th (where he won Best Rock Song for “Human”) and The Today Show performance on September 12th, Lenny managed to deliver an electrifying, five-song mini-concert with full-on intensity at 7:30 am!
Known for his signature blend of rock, soul, and funk, he took the stage while the sun came up with an undeniable energy and passion, seemingly unfazed by his grueling schedule. Fueled by pure adrenaline coursing through his veins, he opened the show with “American Woman.” As guitar and drums rang out, the crowd erupted in thunderous applause, enthralled by Lenny’s effortless command of the stage while manhandling his Gibson Goldtop Les Paul.
The performance continued throughout the morning at a dizzying pace. Lenny was a study in perpetual motion as he glided and danced fluidly across the stage. His soulful vocals soared over the pulsing rhythms of his backing band, seamlessly transitioning between “Are You Gonna Go My Way” and the driving, guitar-driven intensity of a combustible “Fly,” on which he was joined on stage by rapper Quavo. He also performed two new songs from his latest album, “Paralyzed” and “Human.” As he played guitar, it became apparent that his guitar was an extension of his body, with the sounds emanating from it not necessarily guitar chords but harmonic textures married to his vocal melodies.
Throughout the morning, Lenny’s magnetic stage presence and dynamic musicianship kept the audience firmly in his grasp, their eyes and ears transfixed on him whether he was performing, signing autographs for the crowd, or being interviewed by the show’s hosts. Lenny and his band must be experienced live, at the edge of the stage, and in your face! A genuine American rock band of our era!
