Koe Wetzel’s Damn Near Normal tour continues to be anything but normal. Last year, we covered Wetzel at Orion on a scorching hot and humid night, and the crowd was electric. They partied all night with the rebellious country artist. The pyrotechnics in his shows are always a highlight, and the crowd reciprocates the energy of the famous country rock singer.

The Texas singer brought his high-energy show to Huntsville’s Orion Amphitheater on September 20th. Known for his raw, emotional songs, Wetzel delivered a powerful performance that had the crowd singing along from start to finish.

Wetzels’ production has grown even more impressive since last year. The stage now features a massive video wall and an array of pyrotechnics, creating a visually stunning experience for the audience.

Truth be told, I wasn’t at all familiar with opener Dylan Wheeler, but he has a strong voice. The East Texas native brings his own alternative roots to the fold. The song that put him on the map is “Broke A$$ Kid,” a solid single that has given him some recognition. I can see why he’s on the road with Wetzel, as he brings similar styles to the table. I enjoyed his set, and I noticed one of his guitar players was wearing an Iron Maiden tank, which was fine with me.

Kolby Cooper, the second opener, delivered a captivating set that established the mood for the evening. His performance was a dynamic blend of contemporary country toughness with a hint of rock sway. Cooper’s songs highlighted his strong vocals and his knack for connecting with the audience through compelling narratives. His band was in sync, and the overall sound was a perfect fusion of country genuineness and rock intensity, generating an absorbing and energetic ambiance. Cooper’s magnetism and stage presence were indisputable, and by the conclusion of his set, the crowd was fully prepared for the headliner.

As for Wetzel, the night kicked off with the energetic “Twister,” instantly setting the mood. Wetzel’s powerful voice and passionate guitar playing filled the venue, and the crowd was hooked from the beginning. Throughout the night, Wetzel performed hits like “Fuss & Fight,” “Forever,” and “Good Die Young.” His songs often explore themes of love, loss, and the struggles of everyday life, making them relatable to fans of all ages.

One of the highlights of the night was “Good Die Young,” a heartfelt tribute to a friend. The crowd fell silent as Wetzel sang the emotional lyrics, before erupting in applause.

Known for his rowdy anthems, Wetzel’s latest work explores themes of heartbreak, addiction, and the toll of life on the road.

The album features a more polished sound, with influences from R&B and ’70s soft rock, while still maintaining his signature country style. Wetzel also delves into deeper emotional territory in songs like “Sweet Dreams” and “Damn Near Normal.”

Despite the album’s more reflective tone, Wetzel’s popularity continues to rise. His singles have been streaming in the tens of millions, and he’s even made his debut on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. As country music evolves, Wetzel’s blend of traditional country with rock and alternative elements positions him as a leading figure in the genre.
