KALEO’s Music Touches the Heart: A Night of Raw Emotion and Connection

KALEO's Powerful Set Leaves Avondale Audience Mesmerized...

Fortunate weather graced Avondale as the rock gods smiled upon us, defying the remnants of Hurricane Helene. The night was ripe for musical enchantment.

Opening for KALEO, Chance Peña, a The Voice alumnus, and his band, delivered a soulful set. Their “old soul folk” style resonated with the audience, and Peña’s voice echoed the melancholic tones of Jökull’s. A standout performance was Blackbird, a song that struck a chord of heartache.

The drummer was particularly impressive, using unique instruments to create captivating beats. His performance showcased the talent of the entire five-piece ensemble.

Attending live gigs is always a treat, but photographing a band that has helped you through difficult times feels almost divine. KALEO holds that special place in my heart. My love affair began with A/B, a discovery that resonated deeply. Surface Sounds further cemented my fandom. I was fortunate to see them in Avondale in 2021, and their powerful presence, even acknowledged by The Rolling Stones, left a lasting impression.

I’ve shared their music with many friends, including my daughter, who accompanied me tonight.

KALEO was initially scheduled to open for Greta Van Fleet but had to cancel. Their return to Birmingham was highly anticipated. As they took the stage, chills ran down my spine. Jökull Júlíusson, impeccably dressed, opened with USA Today and followed with Break My Baby. The set was a powerful journey, featuring Broken Bones and the emotionally charged I Can’t Go On Without You.

The night wasn’t just about reliving old favorites. JJ introduced Lonely Cowboy, showcasing his artistic growth. Þorleifur Gaukur Davíðsson’s harmonica solos were a highlight, filled with passion and technical prowess.

KALEO’s music evokes raw emotion, and I feel privileged to have experienced them twice at this intimate venue. Avondale remains a favorite for live music, offering a unique closeness between artist and audience. This was a magical night under the stars, a cherished memory for my daughter and a bucket list moment for me.

Wheels take me, I can’t stay

Wheels take me, any place today”
