From the deep lakes and dark forests of Sweden emerges this unique blend of metal and rock. The opening track could easily be mistaken for a ‘Dr Who‘ theme, particularly reminiscent of the Tom Baker BBC era with its classic ‘Whovian‘ atmosphere.

Himiltungl crafts a clever mix spanning melodic black/death to pagan/folk metal. Their sound is like Ghost experimenting with detuned, slower rhythms after a quality smoke session. Bass dominates the mix at calf level, while guitars provide a steady background chug, embodying that 70s stoner metal essence.

These accessible yet unsettling compositions serve as an ideal gateway into darker metal genres. The Swedish growled vocals (presumably not ABBA-style) create an unnerving experience that intensifies with each listen. It’s akin to following Blair Witch folklore into the woods, only to end up facing a corner in abandoned ruins.

For those like me who prefer melodic metal while typically avoiding death/black metal, this album offers an intriguing path to genre experimentation. The deeper you venture into these troubling sounds, the more they draw you in – enough to make one seek refuge in ‘The Sound of Music‘ when home alone.
