Welcome to a huge dose of AOR (Antichrist Orientated Rock). Yes, Deep River Acolytes are not your run of the mill melodic rock band. They hail from Oulu, Finland where the nights are long, and polar bears roam the streets. The band was formed in 2011 as Deliverance before they felt a name change was in order in 2014. The band have released two full albums, and this is their second EP.

They set their stall out early on ‘They Told Their Secrets In Dreams‘ with a grimy riff and the ursine vocals of JT as it rattles along on a dark melody before they ease back a bit on the doomier ‘Rimes For The Vultures‘ where JT roars his lament as guitarists TH and AR serve some tasty riffage. Then ‘The Quarry‘ brings some sinister sounds and a spooky, muffled, spoken word vocal. They give it large on ‘Maze Of Deceit‘ which rattles along on PV’s rhythms. Then things ease right back with the acoustic and churchy organ led ‘Under The Freezing Moon‘. JT sounds mournful over the acoustic guitar. It’s truly doomy and sorrowful.

I find it amazing how a band can make their music sound like their environment. This is dark and cold, and you can feel the biting wind especially on the final track. This is doomy but not quite doom. A couple of the tracks fly along nicely, but the subjects are doomy, and the sounds are dense and claw at you to bring you down. Great stuff and more please soon – apparently, they are well on their way into their next full album. Argonauta are no mugs and know a decent band when they see one, and these guys are decent. My thanks to AR for sending me this wonderful EP.
