One thing that grabbed me straight away was the sheer size of the drum kit Norway’s Satyricon brought with them. This of course left little space for the band and their guests on the smallish stage of Belfast’s Limelight 2 venue.

Not only would they play the album Covenant in it’s entirety but their setlist also featured songs for every release they had. The crowd surfers rained on the staff the second they begun playing a nothing but legendary set. The moshing only intensified throughout the night. One thing is certain that night was nothing less than brutal and legendary.

The second they began playing the fans had gone insane, with crazy headbanging and shouting lyrics. The band delivered with a ghoulish, eerie performance from front man Kyo, whose screeching vocals send chills down one’s spine.

“The trolls of Nordic folklore are believed to be dirty creatures of enormous strength and appetite. Their grotesque physique grants them a comic element, although the humor tends to be on the grim side as these nocturne beings hunger for human flesh. Unsurprisingly, this has earned them a rather bad reputation. All things considered, Finntroll are the perfect embodiment of all aforementioned sentiments – although one might want to replace the hunger for human meat with an unquenchable thirst for booze.”

Arkona live at Gramercy Theatre, New York on October 29th, 2013
Russian pagan/folk metallers ARKONA began their North America leg of their world tour with a live performance at the Gramercy Theater this past October 29th. The warriors are supporting their new record titled “Decade of Glory” which was released earlier this year. Arkona’s lyrics are heavily influenced by Russian folklore and Slavic mythology, and their music incorporates several traditional Russian musical instruments. The name of the band Arkona refers to the last pagan Slavic city-castle.
