“‘Re-insurrection’ is a song about inequality and the mayhem it causes in the world. Inequality is the mother of all evil. In 2019, three individuals in the United States held more wealth than the bottom half of all U.S. households. The top 1% owned a staggering $43.45 trillion.
Is this acceptable? Is this sustainable? The last time I was in Los Angeles, I was shocked by the number of homeless people living on the streets.
We are witnessing inequality grow at an exponential rate. And with it comes the threat of authoritarianism, repression, and a new form of modern slavery. For the wealthiest to maintain their grip on power and wealth, they must sow division, discord, and fear. The Romans had a phrase for it: ‘Divide et impera’—divide and rule.
Inequality, division, and plutocracy are a gateway to fascism. And fascism is a threat to everything we hold dear. The loss of freedom is the loss of life itself. This song is a call to recognize that danger—and to act.
