The Black Dahlia Murder brought their crushing live showcase to the Highline Ballroom in New York; celebrating their latest release “Nightbringers” which is out now on Metal Blade Records and has already received critical acclaim by the Metal community. Supporting acts included Suffocation, Decrepit Birthday, Necrot, Wormwitch and Exhumed.

Suffocation hailing from Long Island, New York had the most killer performance I had ever seen. Filling in for this show, original lead vocalist Frank Mullen graced the fans with his world-class crushing performance. But tour vocalist Kevin Muller joined Frank on stage for a number of songs and both just flat out killed it.

Frank mentioned that Kevin would be his successor. It was unclear whether Frank is leaving Suffocation or just stepping out for tours. Fans both new and old were all in a raging mood for this show. A couple of fans were stage diving to the unsuspecting fans in the front. Kevin Muller also took this opportunity to have some fun while sitting in the back. Suffocations stage crew also joined in on the fun.

Thrones of Blood
Effigy of the
Forgotten
Return to the Abyss
Funeral Inception
Pierced from Within
Clarity Through
Deprivation
Liege of Inveracity
Infecting the Crypts

Next up was The Black Dahlia Murder, playing a crazy 20 song setlist whilst not disappointing to any old or new fans, opened up the show with “Widowmaker”, things quickly got heated up in the pit. Fans took this and all opportunities to stage dive. The fan base screamed as soon as “Statutory Ape” was the next tune-up, as Trevor Strnad helped fans on stage to dive while proficiently making these hardcore fans kindly get off the stage.

In conclusion, The Black Dahlia Murder always puts on a comical show yet serious and extremely energizing set, a reminder to check your neck at the chiropractor the next day, thanks in part to an awesome live performance.

“‘Nightbringers‘ is the album of the year.” – MetalSucks.net

“‘Nightbringers‘ makes for one of the band’s best records… if not their best.” – MetalInjection.net

“…’Nightbringers‘ is without a doubt the band’s best release since their 2007 breakthrough.” – NoCleanSinging.com

“While the Black Dahlia Murder have always been an impressive band, ‘Nightbringers’ finds them on top of their game and performing better than ever before.” – Exclaim.ca

Rather than meticulously plan things out or stick rigidly to any kind of template, when it comes to writing, The Black Dahlia Murder prefer to let things happen organically. In the hands of guitarist Brian Eschbach – who co-founded the band with front-man Trevor Strnad in 2001 – and new recruit Brandon Ellis (Arsis, ex-Cannabis Corpse), Nightbringers is rich with dynamic riffs that are at once fresh and classic The Black Dahlia Murder, resulting in a collection that shifts through many moods and effortlessly incorporates various elements of extreme metal. While Strnad explores a variety of themes and ideas with his lyrics, they are united by the album’s title, which embraces a tenet that has been central to The Black DahliaMurder‘s output since the very beginning. “Death metal and nighttime are synonymous to me,” Strnad explains. “We are the rulers of the darkened hours that the Christian good fears. A lot of archaic ideas that are still upheld – such as marriage and monogamy – came from Christianity, whether people want to acknowledge it or not, and to me, death metal has always been bucking that. It’s ‘being-the-villain music’, because we’re the enemy of Christianity, the enemy of all that is good and traditional. Death metal is for free thinkers, it’s for showing people the path to inner strength and operating on your own will, instead of being told what to do and living in fear, and songs like the title track and ‘Kings Of The Nightworld’ are about leading a legion of awakened minds into battle.”
