Louise Phillips Talks to Feminist Metal Band HAWXX about Pigeons, Tearing Up The Stage at Download and What Fires Them Up!!

Feminism, Pigeons, Download and Energy.... All in a day's work for HAWXX

Interview by Louise Phillips

HAWXX are a shapeshifting, punk infused alt-metal band made up of Anna (lead vocals/ guitar), Hannah (guitar / backing vocals), Jess (drums/ backing vocals) and Julia (bass/ backing vocals). The band are based in London but hailing from Greece, Wales, England and Italy.

This band is our chaos and our catharsis. We write songs about oppressive beauty standards, mental health struggles, violence against women, the unfolding ecological catastrophe and being a sensitive lil soul but also a norty gremlin.

We are a feminist band and it is our aim to be part of changing the landscape of the rock and metal world and for our gigs to be a cathartic experience of love and rage, holding women and queer people at the center.”

With that in mind, the band that has played Download Festival in 2023 to a packed out Dogtooth Stage and who have recently toured with Tremonti and Halocene across the Europe and the UK, have won the PRS Women Make Music Award, and played an exclusive performance at the Heavy Music Awards. sat down with our very own Louise to talk about what makes them tick. Check out the fantastic interview below:

EMBRACE THE UGLY

Intoxicating toxicity
And where’s the autonomy in my own body?
Animal and cerebral, cannibal
Eat the light from your soul
And the filth from your bones

We’re bodies and vessels
We’re brothels and temples
We’re mothers and sluts
We love and disgust

Dig up the grave
We’ve been erased
You’re not gonna win anyway
We are alive
When we forsake and disobey

Cause you don’t owe the world your beauty
Embrace the ugly
We are untamed
I dare you
Disobey

Softness, asymmetry
Let yourself be seen
But when can we unlearn our muscle memory?
Watch the chaos unfold
Frightened hearts be bold
Show me revolting and start the revolt

We’re bodies and vessels
We’re brothels and temples
We’re mothers and sluts
We love and disgust

Dig up the grave
We’ve been erased
You’re not gonna win anyway
We are alive
When we forsake and disobey

Cause you don’t owe the world your beauty
Embrace the ugly
We are untamed
I dare you
Disobey
