What is there to say that hasn’t been said before about Guitar Virtuoso legend Joe Satriani? With over 10 Million copies sold in his career, Satch is one of the most successful solo guitar performers that has ever picked up the instrument. He is as influential today to so many as he has ever been, and with so much quality material in a long back catalog, it’s a real treat and honor to witness the mastery of the iconic Ibanez and Signature model guitars he uses in his live shows.

If you recall our chat with Joe on our channel which you can check out here, he spoke at length about his guitar technique, his career, his awesome new solo record “The Elephants of Mars” his now 18th studio album, yes 18th, think about that for minute folks… is hard enough to make it a record as in singular, imagine being around and successfully and maintaining this high caliber of musicianship that you reach such pinnacle? What a wonder it is.

The Mars Music Hall is filled up to the max with mostly sitting chairs this time around for the show, with no standing room only. A real treat for Satriani fans as they get to witness a bunch of material from his latest record and his last one “Shapeshifting”. The moment his guitar starts wailing away, you become entranced in all it’s glory, a pure display of instrumental class.

The production is rock solid tonight as we start the night with some cool tracks the likes of “Sahara” which has such an awesome oriental groove to it, later we witness the title track” The Elephants of Mars” another churner from the new record. This one just has progressions and innovative ooze all over, as Satch takes you on an intergalactic journey through pace, what a killer tune live. Course classic numbers like “Flying in a Blue Dream” get played for his longtime fans and it’s pristine and as fantastic, as I remember it. We turn serious for a minute to witness “Faceless”, a more laid-back, emotional track off his newest offering, the soaring solos are majestic and his guitar tone is impeccable.

After an hour we hit a short intermission as Joe stepped back from the stage, later another tremendous player and drummer longtime band member Kenny Aronoff comes on stage and kicks a sick drum solo to warm up the crowd from intermission. We get treated to more fantastic playing as “E 104th St NYC 1973” gets a nice reception. More grooviness comes alive with “Ali Farka, Dick Dale, an Alien and Me” as we get a bunch of Santana fusion-influence vibes going on with this one. Later we head towards encore territory with “Satch Boogie” and “Surfing With the Alien”, staples of Satriani’s back catalog. What an epic set over 2 hours’ worth of brilliant guitar playing.

What a legendary career Joe Satriani has had is not every day you can say you had such great players as Steve Vai, Kirk Hammet, and Testament’s Alex Skolnick under your tutelage. Add that with his countless tours with G3, which has seen him share stages with Vai, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Robert Fripp, among others. When it’s all said and done, Satch will do down in history as one of the most influential solo guitar axeman of his time, and like his idol Jimi Hendrix, many will be influenced by his uncanny and impeccable guitar technique. All hail Satch boogie.
