The German trio SAMAVAYO has been around for over 20 years now, and they managed to released quite a lot of records so far. Their latest one is titled Payan, and thanks to a performance at Rockpalast I was made aware of this strong band, because their sound is really huge, namely a great combination of a Fuzz/Doom (BLACK SABBATH) and ALICE IN CHAINS, while classic rock and 70s power rock influences can also be heard on this 7 songs counting new album Payan, but there’s much more to discover.

The band consists of Behrang Alavi (Vocals, Guitar), Andreas Voland (Bass, Vocals) and Stephan Voland (Drums, Vocals), and opener Afghan Sky shows right from the start that we are dealing with an amazing high class band that connects classic Doom Metal and Stoner Rock with some unusual Arabic/World Music influences as well, and this makes them standout far above the rest in the heavy doom/stoner genre. BLACK SABBATH meets ORPHANAGE meets MOTORPSYCHO meets TOOL meets MYRATH might be a good description, although the band definitely has built up an own sound by now.

The uptempo Shot Shot Shot Shot follows and this song has this huge energetic sound that would make OZZY jealous! Althoug the music is quite heavy and heavy stoner doom guitar riff orientated, the drum rhythms have this Arabic touch (especially during the album’s finest song, the sensational Payan), and both vocally and instrumentally speaking it sounds extremely melodic and quite catchy most of the time.

There are guest appearances by members of acts like ELDER, COOGANS BLUFF, GREENLEAD and even a cover of a popular Iranian pop superstar (GOOGOOSH) is included, so I can easily highly recommend this album to fans of real classic Hardrock/Metal in the most possible stoner/doom/BLACK SABBATH direction you can think of, yet with an interesting Arabic touch sometimes!
