Lock up your spaghetti and say a prayer for your braciole — Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine announced yesterday that he’s moving to Italy. Yes, one of metal’s most outspoken firebrands is trading the west coast for the Amalfi coast, Napa Valley for Aosta Valley, and San Francisco for San Francesco al Campo.
The news came during the band’s performance at the AMA Music Festival in Vicenza, Italy. In between songs, the 61-year-old thrash metal icon told the crowd that he would soon be living among them.
“I have something very special I need to tell you guys… A couple of weeks ago I just bought a house in Italy. So think about that — you wake up tomorrow morning and you see me out your window, and I’m walking with my boxes. And you go, ‘Fuck, man, that looks like Dave Mustaine. Look at all those guitars. Shit, that’s gotta be him.’
“I’ve gotta tell you, I am so excited to be able to call Italy a new place for us to live. And I wanna thank you all for your graciousness and helping teach me how to be a good resident here and to learn how to live the Italian life.”
Over the years, Mustaine has moved a few times, leaving homes in Arizona, California, and most recently Tennessee. While sharing his news with the crowd, he said he would remain a U.S. resident, but would live in the Mediterranean country.
“What I said about me moving over here is true. And I’m really excited to live in Italy when we do. We’re gonna keep our residency in the States, but we are gonna be living here. And we really look forward to meeting a lot of you. And I think we’re gonna have a lot of fun together.”
Italy is one of those European countries where you can obtain dual citizenship with the U.S. This move makes sense, since his daughter and wife opened a boutique wine company called House of Mustaine that just recently expanded operations from Southern California to Le Marche, Italy.
We’ll see how long it takes before Dave starts writing anti-government music once he realizes he lives in a country with universal healthcare and (mostly) free college!
