Shifty Shellshock, the lead vocalist of the rap-rock band Crazy Town, has passed away at the age of 49. The artist, whose real name was Seth Binzer, was discovered deceased at a residence in Los Angeles on Monday, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office. The cause of death remains unknown at this time.
Binzer and Bret Mazur, co-founders of Crazy Town, reunited the band in 2007, eventually releasing a new album in 2015. After Mazur’s departure in 2017, Binzer rebranded the band as Crazy Town X.
Crazy Town shot to fame with their 1999 hit single “Butterfly,” which reached the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2001. Their debut album, The Gift of Game, also released in 1999, sold 1.6 million copies. Despite their early success, the band’s subsequent projects did not fare as well, leading to their breakup in 2003.
Seth Binzer, also known as Shifty Shellshock, was seen attending the 2nd Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival’s Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne at the House of Blues on September 10, 2009, in West Hollywood, California. Binzer died on June 24, 2024, in Los Angeles.
Throughout its history, Crazy Town had a rotating roster of members, including DJ Rick One, Mark White, Adam “DJ Adam 12” Bravin, Charles “Rust Epique” Lopez, and the late Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein.
Binzer’s struggles with addiction were made public through his appearances on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab in 2008 and 2009, where he sought treatment for cocaine addiction. He also appeared on the spin-off series Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House during its first season in 2009 and its second season in 2010.
