Vernon Reid, most famously known as the visionary guitarist for Living Colour, will be releasing his highly anticipated new solo album Hoodoo Telemetry on October 3, 2025, on Artone / The Players Club Records.

Vernon’s remarkable recording journey began with Living Colour’s debut album, Vivid, in 1988, and continued with his first solo album, Mistaken Identity, released in 1996. Depending on the era, he effortlessly shifted between musical styles, including jazz, metal, punk, funk, electronica, and hip-hop, collaborating with everyone from Mick Jagger to Public Enemy. Constantly reinventing himself, he still manages to deliver an unmistakable and authentic guitar voice. He has also worn numerous hats since those breakout years, whether producing Grammy-nominated albums for artists like Salif Keita, composing hit movie scores, or lending his guitar skills to Janet Jackson, B.B. King, Tracy Chapman, and Mariah Carey.

Hoodoo Telemetry is a kaleidoscopic 14-song collection that stitches together genres, collaborators, and material from across different eras. The album’s restless energy and controlled chaos mirrors and even challenge what he describes as the “tumultuous” spirit of Living Colour.

It was a pleasure to speak with Vernon, who shares that he has never been one to color inside the lines. In my interview, he explains how the title of his new album, Hoodoo Telemetry, perfectly captures the record’s spirit of transmitting signals and the “Hoodoo is the voodoo that you do” with all its little notions, spells, wishes, hopes, and dreams. He followed that up with these songs that are musically all over the place, just like his mind. Together, we discuss his musical influences, which led him to play fiery, expressive, and improvisational guitar. He divulged how his parents weren’t a fan of his dedicating his life to music, and the person who nudged him to pursue his dream with a simple phrase that he never forgot.
