Finnish rock band The Rasmus brings their 11th studio album, Weirdo, and first for Better Noise Music, to their legions of international loyal fans on September 12th.
The ten tracks feature a mix of dark, energetic, and emotionally charged rock songs, which showcase their Slavic Scales and Nordic Melancholy. Most of the songs on the album were co-written by Lauri Ylönen and legendary songwriter Desmond Child, who has worked with Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, among countless others. Together, they met up in Folegandros, Greece, to work on material that Lauri brought. A full-band demo of all the tracks was then created in Finland and recorded with Marti Frederiksen in Nashville, TN.
In my interview with Lauri, he explained that while he often writes from a melancholic perspective, his songs lean toward optimism and empowerment; songs with messages designed to be uplifting both for the band and listeners during difficult times.
He also spoke about his long-standing collaboration with Desmond Child, with whom he co-wrote the album. He shares that Desmond is a friend, mentor, and father figure, offering both creative direction and unabashed honesty when needed. Their songwriting sessions took place on a remote Greek island, where the isolation fosters creativity.
Looking back, Lauri credited his decades-long friendship with bandmate Eero for helping maintain The Rasmus’ stability and evolution over 30+ years. Although breaking into the U.S. market remains a challenge, the band plans to tour Europe through the end of the year and hopes to revisit the U.S. in early 2026.
