Finnish metal legends Amorphis have unveiled Borderland, their monumental 15th studio album via Reigning Phoenix Music. After over three decades of boundary-pushing evolution, the six-piece deliver what may be their most refined work yet – a masterful blend of myth and modernity that showcases why they remain at metal’s creative forefront.
Recorded at Hansen Studios in Denmark under the expert guidance of Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe), Borderland represents both culmination and transformation. The album’s striking artwork comes courtesy of renowned Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren (Metallica, Black Sabbath), while Pekka Kainulainen’s thoughtful lyricism continues to provide the band’s signature narrative depth.
The haunting focus track ‘Fog To Fog’ exemplifies the album’s atmospheric power. Keyboardist Santeri Kallio traveled to the Arctic Ocean’s edge for inspiration, finding it among “dead black cliffs and feelings frozen forever” in the Norwegian fjords. This desolate landscape birthed a piece that captures both Viking-era survival instincts and modern existential reflection.
From their death metal origins on Karelian Isthmus to genre-defining works like Tales From The Thousand Lakes, Amorphis have consistently reinvented themselves while maintaining their mythological core. Borderland continues this tradition, seamlessly weaving new elements into their celebrated recent era that began with Under The Red Cloud and peaked with 2022’s chart-topping Halo.
The press has taken notice of Borderland‘s ambitious scope. Metal Hammer UK praised the band’s “trademark sound refined to near perfection,” while Powerplay called it “absolutely staggering from start to finish.” Rock Hard France awarded it “Album of the Month,” and Metal Hammer Germany suggested the band “should be declared part of Finland’s national cultural heritage.”
Amorphis will bring Borderland to stages across Europe this autumn on the massive “Blood Dynasty” tour alongside Arch Enemy, Eluveitie, and Gatecreeper, before embarking on an extensive Finnish tour through December. With their sixth Finnish #1 album and top 3 German chart position for Halo still fresh, expectations are sky-high.
Borderland stands as both threshold and destination – proof that after 30+ years, Amorphis remain metal’s most compelling storytellers.
