It seems that Michael Schenker fans have spoken and they axeman has answered their calls, we have another live DVD CD set from their recent tour in support of “Temple of Rock” which marks the return of the mad axeman hitting stages worldwide and proving to the rock arena that he’s still got it. The bulk of the live DVD takes place in Tilburg in the Netherlands, recorded in May 2012. This release focuses on the new line-up that includes Michael Schenker (lead guitar), Doogie White (vocals), Herman Rarebell (drums), Francis Buchholz (bass) and Wayne Findley (rhythm guitar, keyboards). See there three original Scorpions players on stage in a long time? Yeah can’t go wrong with that.
For fans of our zine you may remember when we reviewed the 30th Anniversary Concert DVD set from Schenker and company, a tight package that only got things kick started for him and the band as it ignited a new record and the world tour that this new DVD set is based on. When it comes to Michael Schenker you know the songs, you know the feel of the live environment and his majestic guitar shredding and precision, like they say old rust never fails ain’t nothing like hearing the classics again no matter the age, fine wine gets better with age and with the axeman you feel this way in particular.
The night begins quickly with the opening intro which leads quickly into the classic “Into the Arena” and “Armed and Ready” later to be followed by the Scorpions classic “Lovedrive” bringing flashes of the Schenker combo of Michael and Rudolph once more. Leading on vocals is the ever busy and ultra versatile Doogie White, is there a band that this man can’t lead? Always reliable and solid here on this tour he does a brilliant job covering all the classic cuts. One of the newest cuts from Temple of Rock album shines in “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” as well as the mandatory UFO classic “Lights Out”, “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor” all performed brilliantly by these seasoned rock warriors.
But wait there’s more as extra live footage is provided via the High Voltage festival and a duo guitar attack with his brother Rudolph Schenker on “Rock You Like A Hurricane”, “Hanging On” and “Doctor Doctor”. Great extra footage to a nice overall audio and video package. The rest of the band is tight and constant in tune with each other, nice to see Herman “Ze” German behind the kit again as well as Francis Buchholz on bass. Special appearance appear in Jeff Scott Soto, Michael Voss and Pete Way all lending their help on tracks throughout the tour making this all around live experience a must for Schenker fans.
Bottom line here is the performance by Shenker and all the pro players he decided to bring on board this tour, not only invigorating the axeman but inspiring new wave of fans old and new. A great comeback record topped even better by a great live tour and now a nice package all put together by the folks over at Inakustik, a must have for Schenker holics!!!
