When a band comprised of teenage kids manages to make music so rooted in an era they weren’t even alive during, it makes me wonder a few things, namely how did they so easily tap into a sound and style of music that was the soundtrack of a generation and why make music of this type when part of being in an original band should be focused on forging on with new sounds? Maybe these are questions better left unanswered when that band releases such an impressive debut as New York’s own Tempt have done.

Runaway is an album that is so good, so familiar, and so easy to love it boggles the mind to think the members are so young. Tempt seem to have done something bands with long histories have struggled with for a long time: finding their true sound and constructing songs that are catchy, melodic, and memorable. Songs like “Use It Or Lose It,” “Comin’ On To You,” and “Sapphire” grabbed me so quickly. There were many times while listening to this album I found myself saying, “Woah.” From immediately captivating guitar work delivering anthemic riffs straight out of Survivor, a voice that is emotive and strong reminding of Ted Poley of Danger Danger, and songs that are head nodding, toe tapping melodic masterpieces.

What an incredible album for such a new, young band, I only hope that they haven’t shot their load on this one album. I suppose if they have, it’s a helluva an album to do that with. Something tells me that if they stay on the right path they’ll be around and remembered a long time from now. Check out Tempt’s debut Runaway and see for yourself. I give it
