Jizzy Pearl has always had one of the most distinctive voices in the hard rock world since hitting the scene in the early 90’s with the excellent band Love/Hate. When their debut Black Out In the Red Room, a romping tour de force of hard rock brilliance, came out I was immediately hooked on the sound and especially his voice. Tracks like “Why Do You Think They Call It Dope” and the title track were instant classics, and have remained integral tracks to my life ever since. And though he’s done some cool stuff in the interim (like fronting L.A. Guns on a couple of albums, filling in on the mic for Ratt, and a handful of solo albums and additional Love/Hate stuff,) nothing has captured my ears more than his latest solo album All You Need Is Soul.
Pearl has never been one to sit on his laurels and seems to pride himself in the quality of his work, but with All You Need Is Soul, Jizzy sounds like he’s got something to prove to the world. Songs like “Comin’ Home To the Bone,” “Mortified,” and “Mr. Jimmy” are certified down and dirty, debauched, vintage sleazy hard rock served up as only Jizzy Pearl knows how to do. Joining Pearl is Love/Hate guitarist Darren Housholder, bassist Mark Dutton, and drummer Dave Moreno, sounding as if they’ve played together for a lifetime. The musicianship is top shelf, Jizzy sounds better than ever, and the songs fucking kick major ass!
If you’ve ever been a fan of Jizzy Pearl or any of the bands he has been linked to over the years, this is a must-have album for you. And any fan of old school, balls to the wall hard rock? Again, this is a must-have. I’m simply blown away by the magnitude of this album. All You Need Is Soul? All you need to do is buy this album. This one will find the regular rotation for sure in my world.
