Here’s a rock opera for you – based on the tale of a Japanese boy born with a disability who still manages to become a great Samurai warrior just like his grandfather. A great sounding concept which lends itself to hard and heavy metal – look what Michael Schenker did with ‘Samurai’. Unfortunately, this doesn’t live up to that.
Kicking off with the intro we soon get pushed in to ‘Birth’ which is, at times, awkward sounding and verging on prog. Then basically what get is a load of melodic rock songs that are immediately forgettable. Nothing you haven’t heard before only hundreds of times better.
The concept and subject matter has so much scope and potential to make a real classic with a little more thought and imagination. The songs are all summery radio friendly melodic rock and to my ears don’t really follow a story.
