Adrian VANDENBERG embarked on his musical journey in the early ’80s as a member of his band, VANDENBERG. Subsequently, this remarkable guitarist joined the ranks of WHITESNAKE. He played a pivotal role in crafting all the albums, “Slip Of The Tongue” and “Restless Heart.” This association with the iconic White Snake brand became inseparable from his identity. After a brief stint with MANIC EDEN, he went on to form VANDENBERG’S MOONKINGS. However, three years ago, in 2020, the Dutch musician reclaimed his name. This particular album bore a significant influence from David COVERDALE’s group, WHITESNAKE. “Sin” continues in the same vein, despite a change in vocalists, with Ronnie ROMERO (known for his work with RAINBOW, LORDS OF BLACK, and CORELEONI) being succeeded by Mats LEVEN (associated with CANDLEMASS, TREAT, MALMSTEEN). Bob MARLETTE (known for his work with CHINA SKY, Steve THOMSON, ROKO, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, and SHINEDOWN) played a pivotal role in production. Together, they managed to capture the essence of WHITESNAKE during their American period.

Interestingly, this album seems to showcase an improved sound, characterized by a more open and refined quality compared to their 2020 release. In any case, the sonic landscape here is undeniably massive, and I believe you’ll revel in the sheer wall of guitars. From the very first notes of “Thunder And Lightning,” you’ll find that this impression is indeed accurate, and Mats LEVEN’s vocals closely echo the style of David COVERDALE. It’s almost as if you’re experiencing WHITESNAKE itself! The track boasts a surplus of aggressive guitar work, evoking the spirit of WHITESNAKE’s classic “Still Of The Night.” While “House Of Fire,” a harder rock piece, strikes a balance between the sounds of THIN LIZZY and DIO, Mats LEVEN’s vocals still shine through.

The album briefly ventures into more classic territory, before taking a “bluesy” turn with “Sin.” This track introduces a refreshing and distinctive element compared to the others, with its deliberate mid-tempo pace, heavy instrumentation, and haunting melodies. This change of pace adds a welcome layer of complexity, and Mats LEVEN’s vocal versatility remains impressively precise and engaging. Adrian’s guitar solo on this track is particularly noteworthy, showcasing both his technical prowess and creative brilliance. “Light It Up” delivers an astonishing dose of pure hard rock, firmly in line with WHITESNAKE’s signature style. The power and intensity are palpable. The riffs in “Walking On Water” resonate with a raw, virile, and muscular hard blues essence. Adrian’s guitar work truly ignites the track with his fiery solo. The most spirited and dynamic track, “Burning Skies,” draws inspiration from the likes of DIO, offering a more direct and incisive sound. “Hit The Ground Running” brings a vigorous and effervescent energy that demands the listener’s full attention, boasting both strength and power. One standout track, “Baby You’ve Changed,” stands as an irresistible power ballad that’s sure to captivate fans of the genre. It’s an absolute gem, striking the perfect balance of allure and elegance. The album returns to its hard blues roots with the sultry “Out Of The Shadows,” showcasing superb songwriting and a nostalgic nod to the ’80s, evoking memories of WHITESNAKE’s most iconic albums.

In my opinion, “Sin” surpasses its 2020 release, largely owing to its more polished and assertive production. The production on this album is nothing short of fabolous! Adrian and Mats complement each other seamlessly through their collaborative songwriting, making “Sin” an unequivocal triumph. As an ardent fan with a deep nostalgia for WHITESNAKE, this album both captivates and transports me back to those unforgettable moments.
